Paul or 'Scully', was born in Burnley on 22nd September 1977, moving to Oldham 12 months later.
He started playing Rugby League aged 8 for Royton Tigers, but a year later moved on the North West Counties League with Oldham Juniors.
Aged 10 he moved on to Mayfield and then progressed onto Waterhead followed by Rosebridge aged 15.
Paul captained England Schoolboys (Under 16's) versus France and was capped for BARLA Young Lions against France and Junior Kiwis whilst aged 15.
It was when Paul was 15 that he first signed Professional Forms for Warrington RLFC, and he made his professional debut against Salford in 1995 aged 17.
Paul was capped for England against France and Wales in 1996 aged 18, and later that year, aged 19, he made his Great Britain debut against Papua New Guinea in the Oceania Tour.

In 1998 Paul transferred to St Helens RLFC for a World Record fee for a forward. In 2004 Paul was awarded the captaincy at St Helens, and was awarded the captaincy of Great Britain only a year later in 2005.
